The data source

These figures are based on the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) per diem rates for Fiscal Year 2026, which set the maximum tax-free allowances federal travelers receive for lodging and meals/incidentals (M&IE).

How travel therapy agencies use these rates

Most agencies set their stipends at or near GSA rates because GSA defines the maximum tax-free portion of pay. Anything above GSA is taxable income.

Important: Your actual agency offer may differ — agencies sometimes pay below GSA to reduce risk, occasionally above (with the excess portion being taxable). Always confirm with your recruiter.

What "Standard CONUS rate" means

$110/day lodging and $68/day M&IE is the federal standard rate for anywhere in the contiguous US that isn't a specifically-listed metro area. Most rural and mid-sized assignments use this rate.

What "varies seasonally" means

Some metro areas (Tahoe, beach towns, capital cities) have different GSA rates for different months of the year. Where this applies, we show the 12-month average — your actual stipend depends on when your contract runs.

What about Hawaii and Alaska?

Hawaii and Alaska use a separate federal rate system (DTMO / OCONUS) that's not currently included in this calculator. We're working on adding them.

How Travel Therapy Stipends Work

When you take a travel therapy assignment away from your tax home, you incur duplicated living expenses — you're paying for housing and meals at your assignment location while still maintaining your permanent residence. Tax-free stipends are designed to reimburse you for these duplicated costs.

Your total travel therapy compensation package is typically made up of three components: a taxable hourly or weekly wage, a housing stipend, and a meals & incidental expenses (M&IE) stipend. The stipends are not subject to federal or state income tax, Social Security, or Medicare taxes — which is why they can significantly increase your take-home pay compared to a permanent position with a similar gross amount.

Housing Stipend

Covers rent, utilities, and other housing costs at your assignment location. Based on GSA per diem rates for the area. Ranges from $680/wk in lower-cost areas to $1,150+/wk in cities like New York and Anchorage.

Meals & Incidental Expenses

Covers food, tips, laundry, and other daily living expenses while on assignment. Typically calculated as 40–50% of the housing stipend. Ranges from roughly $300 to $520+ per week depending on location.

Tax Home Requirement

You must maintain a permanent residence (tax home) to qualify for tax-free stipends. This means paying rent or a mortgage at a fixed address and returning to it between assignments. Without a valid tax home, all stipends become taxable.

Maximizing Your Stipend

There are several strategies travel therapists use to maximize the value of their stipends. Finding housing that costs less than your stipend is the most direct approach — the difference is yours to keep, tax-free. Traveling with a partner or roommate to split costs, negotiating extended-stay hotel rates, or choosing assignments near affordable neighborhoods can all help.

You can also negotiate how your pay package is structured. If you have a valid tax home and low housing costs, you may prefer a higher stipend and lower taxable wage to maximize your tax-free income. Conversely, if you don't have a tax home or need to maximize taxable income for loan applications, you can request a higher taxable wage.

Important: While maximizing stipends is smart, make sure you're maintaining a legitimate tax home. The IRS can reclassify stipends as taxable income if they determine you're an itinerant worker without a true permanent residence. Keep records of your tax home expenses, return trips, and voter registration at your permanent address.
